Calling every practice effect a benefit hides the key question: benefit for which outcome? A shorter 5×5 time with the same error rate is evidence about that 5×5 task. It is not automatically evidence about another activity.
Repetition can support familiarity with number locations, input mapping, scanning patterns, and the expectation of randomized layouts. These mechanisms are enough to explain why local history may change without invoking a broad brain effect.
